Club Runs every Sunday?

23 February, 2009 21:59

At the committee we've been talking of ways to move the club forward and bring the club together. One of the strong ideas was that a club our size could really do with a club ride every Sunday- a traditional Sunday club run if you will. Same time, same place, every week.

It would be nice to know what club members think- would it help to have a ride every week? How long? Cafe stop?

The monthly ladies ride would continue unaffected regardless of other changes.

I look forward to every Sunday's ride as it is one of the free days I have in a week as everybody's else.

50-70 miles.

Chris,

I'd be happy to organise some of these - let me know if you're going ahead.

Andy.

Thanks Andy- that's a couple of volunteers now.

Not many replies here, are there any lurkers with an opinion?

Just to say that saying you would be interested in weekly club runs doesn't mean you've volunteered to run them!!

The reason to nominate a 'ride leader' is purely to satisfy club insurance through BC should there be an inident, and should involve relatively litte on the day other than turning up! I will put up ride leader responsibilities in due course, but it's not arduous.

Chris,

I`ll organise a few (shifts permitting).

I'd be interested in a weekly club run, but it would need to be not too long or too fast. I wonder if there'd be any interest in a regular ride for asthmatics who eat cake more often than strictly necessary? Haven't made it to a ladies' ride yet, but now I know they're actually 2nd Sunday each month and not the 3rd as stated on the road rides page I will hopefully make the next one!

Couldn't lead a ride, though, as my sense of direction, map and road-sign reading abilities are not good!

Helens Idea sounds good to me, I too like cake and haven't made the ladies ride yet but I do intend to. Maybe you and I should ride out Helen, only my map reading abilities and sense of direction are also poor, could be fun though.

Thanks for pointing that out Helen, I'll get that sorted. I'm sorry it resulted in you turning up on the wrong day

14 March, 2009 20:02

Hi Chris, No apology needed - it's just that I could have done the February ladies' ride had I known, as I was free that weekend.

Karen - yes, let's meet up. I'm away next weekend, but free 28/29 March and 4/5 April. Failing that, might see you at the next ladies' ride? If you'd like to contact me offline, my email address is helencollier@tiscali.co.uk.

some thoughts on clubruns

for many long established clubs "THE event of the week" is the clubrun.

For Matlock CC this isn't the case.

Why?

Terrain dosn't help

Hilly terrain tends to seperate riders of even fairly similar ability, so diverse riders dont stand a chance of comfortably staying together.

Clubs that have well attended club runs either have a listed diary of clubruns so that riders know what to expect or an "A" "B" or "C" ride so that riders can select the level of ride that suits them (we are a way of that yet)

but if only a handful of riders turn up you can't have a selection of rides

MCC would really benifit from a social riding scene but realistically, at the moment it is a "racing" not "riding" club.

I know that alot of riders head out on a Sunday, riding different distances, at different speeds, but dont sem to want to ride together.

I see other clubruns heading out together, all with matching club kit, clearly with pride in their club and a shared passion for riding and don't quite understand what is missing from our club.

happy to put my name on the list for a ride or two by the way.

Richard's post raises some interesting points.

Maybe we could have an initial Sunday "Launch" ride with all club members urged to turn out if they possibly can. If the proposed route were posted on the site or in the April newsletter, people could opt in to all or part of it. Alternatively, depending on how many people turn out, the slower ones could just agree to pair up and turn back when we've had enough?

I'm sure we all have a shared pride and passion for the club, I don't think that there's anything missing there.
Time pressures and different training methods have pretty much killed off the traditional club run.
I'd agree that we could do with more organised club rides but we're certainly not the only club with the same problem.

I am keen to have more Club rides where ladies turn up to, where i would not have to worry about the fast pace and keeping up. I mean I am not that slow, but would not be able to maintain a really fast pace. I have done 1 ladies ride in March and hope to get out this Sunday, but would be nice to have the option to ride on other weekends I have free.

I do alot of cycling in the Peaks and would be happy to lead a moderate pace ride say 30 - 40 miles taking a pace of around 13- 15mph with tea shop. Ideally I like to be done by lunchtime 1pm as dont get much spare time with having a little one to get back to.

Karen and Helen, look forward to meeting you on Sunday if you are out. Just hope the weather gets better.

I have been following this thread with interest. I am not yet a club member but have been looking at various local clubs websites researching which would be most suitable for me to join.

I feel that a regular club run at a sensible pace would be an ideal way to encourage new people like myself to join and contribute to the club. If this club run feels to easy for some or they want to progress then have a couple of different rides.

I fully appreciate that the more competitive members will need to train for specific goals at a faster pace but there are lots of us who may not be able to reach that sort of level of performance.

I would willingly participate in a 13-15mph run most Sunday mornings.

Just my opinion as an outsider looking to possibly join a local club.

Dawn
We had a great club run last Sunday ,around 40 miles. It was a mixed bunch ,some youngsters and some Oldies like me,it was good to ride with and talk to new people.90% club kit so people knew we were Matlock CC.

This has gone very quiet - has the committee discussed this further?

03 June, 2009 17:38

In a word, yes!

Hopefully there'll be more to say in the near future. It's nothing secretive, just not fully sorted out as yet.

Hi
I am interested to know if the ladies sunday ride is still going - haven't been out with the club for ages

25 June, 2009 19:51

After much hype I'm pleased to say that club runs will happen every Sunday during July and August, to continue if demand is there- see the related news article.

If anyone has any suggestions or comments regarding the proposed format please continue to add them below.

Also- could anyone volunteer to be named as a ride leader? You can leave your details below or by emailing me on iam_mrmetcalfe [at] hotmail.com
