CX Training
Skills training session this Saturday in Whitworth Park, 10.30-12.
Come and practice your dismounts and see if you've got your tubs stuck on properly.
The famous collapsible hurdles will be making an appearance again :-)
3 of us coming Lee...see you there
I'll try to come over if I haven't got the kids. Whitworth Park? Is that behind the hotel somewhere or down towards Darley Bridge?
Tubs? ooer. I've got inner tubes - will I be allowed?
Both really - behind the Whitworth Centre. We'll be down at the bottom of the park to the right of the pond and the skatepark.
Inner tubes more than welcome - slightly less entertaining though.
Hi lee
I will be their saturday morning
Inner tubes here too, me and glue don't mix.
I've managed to get permission to sneak out for a bit so will be there to see how the experts do it!
I've never tried the rapid dismount technique (at least not intentionally) so should be fun.
Might not be able to stretch it til 12 though as I need to go over the Shrewsbury to collect the kids from the Grandparents.
see you there
Mike
Hi,
I'm not a member (but open to persuasion). Is it OK for me to turn up?
Ta,
Thanks for giving us a great training session, Lee. Even though I wasn't brave enough to have a go of the hurdles, and I still haven't mastered the 'jumping on the bike' thing, I really enjoyed the session. Also, I have plenty of things to practice during the week (when no-one's looking, of course)! Hopefully see you for next Saturday's session. Cheers, Helen.
I'm glad everyone seemed to enjoy it and get something out of it.
Perfect demonstration here of hurdling -

Start at about 50" in and see how Paul Oldham and Stu Wearmouth do it. Then keep watching for a minute or so and see how technique deteriorates as you go down the field. The folk at the back are losing stacks of time just for the want of a little practice.
There were two sets of hurdles on each 4-minute lap, so it very quickly adds up!
Echo that Helen. Thanks to Lee for giving up his Saturday morning to take us through some of the often abused basics. It also helped me to identify that my rear brake needed attention. Unfortunately not before I came off in front of everyone. Had some lovely bruises to show for it whilst running the Exterminator race yesterday out at Burbage.
Thanks also to the kind lady from the group who offered adssistance when my rear brake came apart going home up Hackney Lane.
Thankyou Lee, and everyone else that turned up on Saturday. Keep these tips coming. The kids listen to others, not their parents, I am not quite sure about what the adults do. But the sound of 'Lee said do it this way!' has already been heard quite regularly.
It was great to see all the age groups mixing. The more we get this type of thing happening, the more we may retain these youngsters as they feel part of the 'Team'.
Perhaps you may get more cheers in your hour long struggles as the youngsters have broken the ice and have a clue who these older folk are.
Good luck to alll in this up coming season.
'Lee said do it this way!'
I shall refer my daughter to this comment in a few years when she becomes a teenager!
Seriously though, the 'team' aspect is the one I was aiming for more than anything, as keeping hold of our younger members is always a problem and one that is discussed within the club committee all the time. Although some of the things we did on Saturday aren't relevant (yet) to some of the younger riders, I think it's good to have one large low-key group rather than two seperate ones.
It works both ways as well Paul - at NDCXL level the U10/12 races occur before most of the senior riders arrive, and the Youth race is on just as they're signing on/sorting bikes out, so you might find that there are more adults cheering on the youngsters this season.
Lee,
Something that was discussed by a few parents last CX season and came up again on Saturday and could possibly go to the NDCXL meeting as an idea.
Introduce in U10's race, two lines sprayed on the floor which riders have to dismount and re-mount after passing.
U 12's race same as senior size gap but with only a single 15cm hurdle in the middle of the two lines.
This would create a logical progression rather than getting to U14's and coming across 40cm hurdles as a surprise.
It may also split the riders a bit more in the exocet style U12 race's.
Just a thought and expect that others have had the same idea in the past.
