BSCA East Midlands Area Hill Climb Championship

A wet, gloomy Sunday morning didn’t deter thirteen keen young riders from taking part in the BSCA East Midlands area hill climb championships on the 28th September. An impressive number of under-8s entered the race, which took place on the hill from High Tor Road, Starkholmes. The road is ideal for the youngsters, being tarmacked and closed to traffic, but that doesn’t stop the hill from being a fearsome climb, with two hairpin bends adding to the difficulty.
Luckily, the rain stopped and the temperature rose before the start of the event, and with supporters lining the road, the riders set off at minute intervals.
A number of the age groups were uncontested, with Emily Thoday (U14 girls), Patrick Smart (U14 boys) and Holly Gould (U12 girls) winning their races with impressive times.
In the U12 boys event Arthur Green beat Jamie Ingram (a swimmer by trade), by over “arthur” minute with a scorching time of 1:16.6 .
The U10s race was closer, just five seconds separating Chris Wearn from the winner Oliver Edwards. Alexander Brailsford finished 3rd, very unlucky to have his chain came off before the first bend.
James Luscombe had a great ride, dipping under 2 minutes to win the U8s race, with Harry Morley and Nick Edwards finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. The youngest riders, Matthew Luscombe and Adam Wearn, battled valiantly up the hill, having to stop a couple of times, but never giving up.
