ROUND 5 ALFRETON PARK
Cyclo Cross must be on the up - another all time record set by an entry of 84 riders in the races for Under 12 years. Derwent Valley ATC, the promoting club some years ago, also set the all time record of 148 in the event for senior riders and whilst at 124 riders there was no new record, at least it was the second highest attendance this season.
The course enabled fast racing using woodland as well as the grassy slopes of the Park and although each lap was almost two miles round, the top riders were lapping at an average of just over 7 minutes each lap.
MATLOCK RIDERS ALMOST DOMINATE
The first race was for Under 10 years and Matlock CC's winner John Webster surprised Sherwood's Scott Hookway who was unbeaten previously.
Next racing was for the Under 12's and Matlock CC's Arthur Green once again remained unbeaten. Matlock CC's Sarah Lomas won the girl's race as well.
The Youth Race followed next. A battle was expected between Derby's Sam Lowe and our John Lomas but John suffered the problem of a tyre coming off his wheel and by the time he got a spare bike, Sam, not surprisingly had gone! John chased very hard and closed the gap but had to settle for second to Sam Lowe.
The main event saw Matlock's Lee Shunburne in contention throughout the race but as the race neared completion his rivals left him for a few seconds and he had to settle for fourth place. Meanwhile, Christine Howard, better known for her prowess at fell running, in only her second event triumphed as first woman.
